Hitman Tommy's 2014 Goals 1st Quarter Update

Wow where has the first part of 2014 gone? It seems like it was just a couple weeks ago that I had blogged about what I hoped to accomplish gaming wise this year yet almost 3 months have passed. In the typical fashion of this blog I have procrastinated about getting my next entry done. Once again that darn real life got in the way and I didn’t get around to it and then my laptop finally went the way of the dodo at the end of February which then really limited my ability to type up a post. My wife does have an Ipad but I’m absolutely rubbish with it. Typing a blog post with that would probably take me forever on that thing. Regardless I’ve eventually been able to work my way through having the technology available to write this.

The pickups for me have been pretty lean for me these last couple months. I haven’t spent as much time out on the hunt lately and even when I have there hasn’t been a whole lot that has caught my fancy. That being said I of course still found some games to buy but I just went over all of those on the most recent episode of the Two Crude Dudes podcast (see below). I figured saying that we are at the end of March it would be a good opportunity to update everyone on the progress I’ve made with my collecting/playing goals thus far.

Goal #1: Increase NES Collection by 41 Cartridges.
Progress: 10/41 = 24.39%

Most of this progress occurred just shortly after my last blog post. I made a couple online purchases and came away with 7 new NES games. Beyond that I only found two over a month ago and then Tyson was good enough to bring me back a copy of Road Runner. Since then the NES reserves have been pretty dry. I can’t remember the last time I went over 30 days without picking up a new one. However that aside I’m more or less on track for where I want to be come year end.

Goal #2: Spend more time with the Wii U
Progress: In Progress

I started 2014 off on a good pace of using my Wii U, unfortunately that has really tapered off in last couple months. I blame this partially on new releases for other systems. I picked up Bravely Default on 3DS and most my gaming spare time was devoted to that. More recently I picked up the Final Fantasy X remastered on PS3 and that is what has consumed the last week and a half. I have several Wii U games sitting at home that I am looking forward to playing and I hope to be able to pick things back up in April.

Titles I played on Wii U in 2014: Mighty Switch Force, Lego Undercover
Titles I beat on Wii U in 2014: None

Goal #3: Complete 5 Xbox 360 games
Progress: 2/5 = 40%

February 2014 was dubbed the Second Annual Fighting Game Month here at River City Retro. Unfortunately it wasn’t as successful as it was in 2013. However as a result I did spend some time playing Injustice. I spent a good amount of time unlocking costumes/backgrounds etc and also played through the story mode. Albeit the story mode isn’t very long but with the amount of time I put into some of the extras I consider it to be completed. The second game I attacked was Lego Batman. I had played it before but only for the first few levels so I took the time play through all the Hero and Villain levels. I also spent a few hours replaying some of them in order to unlock more achievements. I still have a little bit more work to do on this one to get 100% of the achievements but I have completed the story mode so again this one I consider complete.

Goal #4: Get the last two issues of OPM
Progress: 0/2 = 0%

No progress on this. I’ve checked online for either issue I need but nothing has surfaced yet.

Goal #5: Devote more time to the Blog

Progress: Ongoing

I have spent a little bit more time in regards to the blog these last 6 weeks. Tyson and I have recorded two episodes of the podcast in that time. But mostly my efforts towards the blog have been more behind the scenes as opposed to actually posting. I’m looking forward to being more active on that side of things.

Well I think that’ll about do it. The year has gone quick so far and while I feel I’ve made some very good strides forward with my collections there’s still a lot of work to be done.

I’d like to take a few moments to formally welcome Epic Jimmy to the River City Retro team. I’m looking forward to watching him proceed in his Gamecube Quest and more important to have a chance to get together with him and Tyson and enjoy playing some of these god awful games that he’s picking up. Anyways Welcome Jimmy! Glad to have you aboard.

That’ll do it for me for now. I’m sure Tyson will be back soon with another entry as soon as he’s done “repaying” me for fixing him up with a copy of Tomba.

Until next time…. It’s not hording if you alphabetize your games!

Primer: Epic Jimmy

Tyson and Tommy have generously given me reign to invade the River City Retro blog. Let me start off by saying that my collection pales in comparison to these guy’s digital libraries of awesomeness. I currently sit at a grand total of 287 games.  Nothing to slouch at, sure, but next to Super Robot and the Hitman it’s like throwing a cucumber down a hallway. Am I using that right? Perhaps out of their good nature, or maybe even pity, these two stand up guys have taken the initiative to show me the art of game chasing. They have each taken me out to the local hotspots, educated me on the eccentricities of the shop owners, and have taught me to never pay more than you have to…you can always find it for cheaper.  Alright, enough ball sucking.

When I first started game chasing I found myself reluctant to buy much at all.  The deals were definitely there, but I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to accomplish. In the past, I would usually trade in whatever I was done with because money was really tight and I wanted to play the latest and greatest. My PS3 (still 'current gen' to me) collection still stands as my biggest for any console.

My first thought was that I wouldn’t buy anything that I wasn’t going to play. I mean, why spend money on something that was going to sit on my shelf indefinitely? Who the hell would do that!? Next, I thought that it would be nice to rebuy all the games that I used to own and now regretted getting rid of. Still, that's not really too many games, but once my thinking parts kicked in, the nostalgia factor sank in, and this led me to the epiphany of: The Quest.

My sister passed away going on 5 years now.  I love her, and I miss her, but this blog entry is not about feeling bad about what happened; it’s about celebrating her, and her love of gaming. I was privileged to inherit her video game collection recently, which included a PS2, a Sega Game Gear, a Nintendo 64, a Nintendo DS, and a Nintendo GameCube. I never had a GameCube, and every time I look at it, I smile and think of my sister.  I thought, why not honor her by collecting GameCube games, and thus The Quest was born.

Including the 11 games I inherited with the console, I am currently sitting at 53 GameCube games (wow, there’s a lot of shitters). Plus, I was already able to score a Wavebird for $15! I’m really excited to continue chasing and watch this collection build into a complete set. Thank you for allowing me to share The Quest with you here, along with all the other video game treasures I stumble upon along the way. Wait, did somebody say Dreamcast?

Buyer's Remorse #29 - Lego My Floigan

Hey Mother Jumpers!

Here's a short little update with some pics of games that I absorbed into my android body. The more games I absorb, the closer I get to becoming Perfect Robot Tyson and I can finally be strong enough to destroy Super Saiyan Tommy and Future Jimmy.

The focus of my collecting has really tipped in the Dreamcast direction lately since I bought a VGA cable and hooked my DC up to an HDTV. The Dreamcast was so ahead of it's time and it looks so fucking sexy in 480p. The cable cost me less than 20 bucks shipped and was a wise investment. I highly recommend taking this route with your Dreamcast. Not all games are VGA compatible, but a damn large amount of them work just fine.  I also picked up a Component Cable for my Wii so I can play Gamecube games on it and have them look a little sharper too.

I'd like to see Moigle Floigan join the UFC. He's retard strong!
My other recent obsession was brought on by hanging out with River City Retro's own Epic Jimmy. I've decided to collect as many of the Lego games as I can and mine them for Achievements and Trophies. For more exploits of EJ and his quest to hoard Gamecube games, follow him on Twitter at @Epic_Jimmy.

Last, but not least was a score of extraordinary magnitude! Hitman Tommy has my gratitude. He is a noble leader. Let's all give Hitman Tommy a great big hand!

Try it again! This time wif feewing...
Seriously, the fucker found me a copy of Tomba for FIVE BUCKS!! I finally speared that white whale and cut off it's dork! Look up the definition of "dork" if that last joke didn't land.

Anyways, to make a long story short, I bought a copy of Tomba right when it came out. I gave it as a gift to my girlfriend at the time, who also happens to be Tommy's sister. We played the shit out of it and nailed 100% of the game after many hours of fun. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Sadly, when I broke up with this girl, she got custody of Tomba and I got custody of Tomba 2 as by then we had also purchased the sequel. I have been trying to reacquire Tomba for over 12 years while that evil fucker Tommy ended up inheriting his sister's copy when she gave up gaming and became more boring. He waved my previous copy of Tomba in my face regularly and I considered burning down his house just to ensure that no one could own it, if I could not have it back.

To make matters worse, Tomba became a dreaded "rare game" and commanded high prices online. I did not give one sweet fuck that it was considered "rare" now, I just wanted back one of my favorite games so I could play the damn thing again and reclaim a piece of my soul that was torn out when I lost it to a domestic battle. So anyways, Tommy stumbled across a copy of Tomba at a flea market for 5 bucks and he knew that game collecting karma demanded that he buy it for me. Also, if he owned two copies of Tomba and I found out, I would beat him to death with a Dual Shock controller.

Never let the girl keep any games when you break up! It will haunt you!
This blog entry is dedicated to Hitman "Tombus" who landed me this huge score for my collection. May you find the NES you are looking for...
