Buyer Remorse #30 - Pawn Odyssey

I'm back!

So much can happen in just a few short weeks, and by "happen" I actually mean that so much can be purchased in a few short weeks! I have less remorse than usual as I managed to pick up some pretty cool shit to add to the retro basement.

The RCR crew also made it out to the first ever "Retro Gamers Unite" event in Winnipeg and found some good deals from the vendors there as well as marveled at the strong turnout. The community center where the event was held was packed and folks were waiting to get in all day. The buzz over the event was excellent and it collected a lot of funds and donations for the local Lighthouse Mission. A great day and a very worthy cause. Mainly because when my wife finally kicks my ass out for buying too many games, I'll need to live at the Lighthouse Mission...

While there was not a particular focus for tackling the vendors at Retro Gamers Unite, I still managed to grab some interesting items that were either a really cheap price, or a unique item that I don't really see in the wild very often. I nearly pulled the trigger on a nice copy of Mega Man Legends, but instead I snagged a minty Silent Hill for PS1. I also grabbed a couple boxed NES games and some awesome NES instruction manuals!

Greatest Hit? Sounds like a Croc of shit.

Whomp 'Em was programmed by a racist paleface.

One of the vendors at the event was even the legendary "Video King" that was my favorite childhood video store. The family that owned Video King still operates in a small capacity, and they are selling off their remaining stock dating back to the NES games that I rented in my youth. I'm pretty sure my boxed copy of Batman on NES is actually one that I rented as a child. Video King in Fort Richmond was where I discovered the arcade classic Cadash and it changed my life and took all my quarters for years. I now own the JAMMA board of Cadash and plan to swap it into my arcade cabinet this year.

I miss video rental stores. Except Blockbuster.
I snagged a few other games recently and also found a cool fight stick for my Wii at Value Village. I don't think the Wii has any fighting games, but maybe I can go apeshit on the buttons playing Raving Rabbids or something.

The TV show for Defiance is actually pretty solid.

The other major score came from a rather notorious pawn shop in a very sketchy area of town. I spotted it on the counter when I walked in and decided to make an offer. This set off a chain of events that has to be heard to be believed. I'm going to save the story for the next episode of Two Crude Dudes, but let's just say that there was urine, ladders, and an appearance by some firemen. The exchange also nearly included a moment that you might see in a CZW Deathmatch.

Here's a photo of Tyson shopping at the pawn shop today...
Anyways, after the bizarre exchange with the shopkeeper, I managed to snag myself a complete in box Magnavox Odyssey 2 with 7 complete games! It's all in great shape, but I did have to wipe 30+ years worth of scum off the box.

The Odyssey 2 was released in North America in July 1978. I was released from my mother's vagina in March 1978. We're practically brothers! I'm starting to run out of game consoles to buy now. I still need a Sega 32x and an Atari Jaguar. However, I'm starting to think I need an MSX. Mainly because of these two games. They sound awesome!

See you next time!
